Maria Russo is an award-winning photographer, writer, and editor whose work has been featured in Architectural Digest, People Magazine, Inc., Forbes, National Geographic, BBC America, The Huffington Post, AFAR, Google Field Trip, LensCulture, Sony Alpha, and VII Photo Agency, among others. She is an ongoing contributor to National Geographic’s Your Shot and was a finalist in the 2023 Nature Conservancy Photo Contest.

Russo has traveled extensively, exploring the complex relationships between culture, community, and the natural world, as well as humanity’s impact on the environment. These experiences led her to develop brand journalism projects with tourism boards and hospitality brands focused on themes such as sustainable travel, community-led development, climate resilience, biodiversity, and gender-responsive economic initiatives.

As co-founder of The Culture-ist, an online magazine and creative agency centered on travel, hospitality, food, wellness, and social impact. Russo merged her passion for storytelling with her expertise in strategic marketing and creative direction. The Culture-ist amplifies stories that matter while offering bespoke marketing solutions to mission-driven brands. Through integrated digital strategies—including SEO, SEM, email marketing, social media, and content marketing—the agency enhances brand visibility and engagement. By analyzing performance metrics and market trends, Russo ensures measurable ROI and data-driven optimization of future marketing efforts.

Early in her career, Russo worked across media, publishing, and television at companies including MTV Networks, People Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, Warner Bros., and WOR News Talk Radio. She has collaborated with a diverse roster of brands such as Allbirds, Plant People, Vittoria Coffee, Google, Ford, Alila, Four Seasons, Aman Resorts, and AOL Lifestyle. During her time at People Magazine, she interviewed notable figures including Janet Jackson, Walter Cronkite, Seth Meyers, Christie Brinkley, Sally Field, Martin Sheen, Adrian Grenier, Sharon Osbourne, Angela Bassett, Shannen Doherty, and Glenn Close. She also served as a contributing writer for Inc.com.

In 2016, Russo co-developed a graduate-level course at Emerson College with Susanne Althoff, former editor-in-chief of Boston Globe Magazine. The course, titled “Topics in Writing and Publishing: Writing and Editing for TheCultureist.com,” focused on preparing students for careers in digital media and editorial storytelling.
